Set 1 - Nik

Below are photos from the first attempts at using the lighting, due to college being closed they are taken in my basement with an old blue bed sheet as a simple backdrop.

These first three photos show the subject light from only the right, only the left and then from both. Arranging the lights in different manors allows certain elements or features to be highlighted or ignored appropriately. The lighting also has an affect on the projection of the given subject, for instance dull and moody lighting will portray the subject in such a way. It should be noted that in the given photos the subject was asked to keep a relatively dead pan facial expression in order to not draw away from the change in conditions and that they are not particularly well composed.

Once I had decided on appropriate lighting I set about taking photos of the subject pulling various faces and expressions in order to get a general feel for where I would be going with this project. In retrospect these are all very rigid but still somewhat of a progression into the types of portraits I'd like to be taking.
Most successful Image
Below is what I feel is the best image from this series of photos, although it is important to realise I still have criticisms of it. Overall I feel hat it is well light and composed with a strong focus on the eyes and jumper of the sitter. They are showing quite a blank stare but also seem to be holding eye contact with the viewer, this is along the lines of what I would like to achieve but hopefully without looking as forced. The negative points for this image are the are the framing of the subject, the blue sheet was used as a basic background but it is quite obvious that it wasn't large enough, however this could be rectified by simple cropping.

Least successful Image
In contrast I feel that this is the worst image from the series, it is not that well composed with the subject unintentionally of centre. Furthermore the use of only one light has resulted in one side of the face being washed out and leaving a large shadow on the other side of them. It is also not very sharply focused or particularly interesting visually, I feel the fact that the subject is not looking and appears to be disinterested is part of the cause for this. Overall I also think that both images are slightly too yellow but this could also be rectified with some light editing.

More of these images can be seen in a small booklet and the rest will be contained on a memory stick upon hand in.
